rectory of the new university of lisbon

the conference wil take place at the new rectory building of the new university of lisbon. it is located in campus de campolide.

winner of the valmor architecture prize in 2002, the rectory building "is one of those clear works which result from the logical distribution of a programme and which, simultaneously, fit in with the typology and history of the place, sharing its chosen typology with the will to shape the city." [manuel graça dias, expresso newspaper, 20.07.2002]

the architects manuel aires mateus and francisco aires mateus, authors of the project, describe their work in the following way:

"the piece of land is a promontory next to one of the main entrances to lisbon. the space is bordered by the ancient and long jesuit college. the construction of the rectory building, perpendicular to the college, adds a new dimension to the whole, capturing a three-dimensional space. the programme anticipated two groups of very distinct spaces: administrative functions, tidied away, in the tower overlooking monsanto park; representative functions, with large areas, installed in the basement. the resulting building is the same height as the three-floor college, with its façade in white stone so as not to allow one to fully perceive its many levels. the cover over the large spaces is walkable and connects the campus’ main areas. under this square, the representative spaces are carved using the overlap of the three levels, above which the building operates three-dimensionally. "
