travel information

in lisbon there is a choice of trains, buses, trams, taxis, metro, funiculars (glória and bica) and car rental agencies. Domestic flights in portugal are relatively expensive. car hire is a good choice for a bigger party.

santa apolónia station is the main departure point for trains from lisboa to the north and outside portugal.

trains belonging to fertagus, a private railway company, run between the two sides of the river tagus across the 25 de abril bridge (fogueteiro/entrecampos line).

tickets are on sale at station ticket offices and from automatic vending machines.

trams and buses
carris is lisbon's tram and bus company. buy tickets prior to boarding. buses run 6.30am-1am, trams 5am-1am.

sightseeing tours take tourists around lisbon in open-topped buses or 19th-century trams. there are three different tours: carris tour, which visits the downtown area and the historical belém quarter, the colinas tour, which takes you to the old part of the city, and the aerobus, which runs between the airport, city centre and the cascais railway line. the bica or glória funicular are also worth trying.

metro
The lisbon metro network, which has recently been extended, now reaches most of the city. runs from 6.30am-1am, tickets €0.65 one-way, 7-day and 10-journey options available.

there are four metro lines, identified by names and colours. it is the fastest way to get to the old part of the city and to visit the different tourist attractions, especially at rush hour.

the price varies from €0.60 to €1.65.

taxi
taxis are normally painted cream, although there are still some that are black and green. if you call a taxi by phone there is an extra charge of €0.75. there is also a charge of €1.50 for luggage carried in the boot. tips are optional, but 10% is normal.

taxi voucher
this service is available to passengers arriving at lisboa airport who wish to travel by taxi.
the service operates with vouchers on sale at the turismo de lisboa counter, located in the terminal. the price of the voucher depends on the distance of the trip or length of time, as well as on the type of service required: normal or personalized (in the former, the driver is trained to speak foreign languages and acts as tourist guide).
